The Process

What is aluminum extrusion?

Extrusion forces heated aluminum billet through a highly engineered steel die to create continuous profiles. It allows for complex cross-sections that integrate mounting channels, heat-dissipating fins, and structural ribs directly into the raw material shape.

Ideal for structural framing, thermal management, and enclosures, aluminum extrusion minimizes material waste and downstream machining while maintaining a high strength-to-weight ratio.

Capabilities

Extrusion profiles & tooling

Solid

Solid Profiles

Solid shapes with no enclosed voids. Highly cost-effective tooling for rails, brackets, heatsinks with fins, and structural supports.

Best for

Heatsinks, brackets, and structural beams.

Hollow

Hollow & Semi-Hollow

Profiles featuring completely enclosed voids or deep channels. Manufactured using specialized porthole dies to merge material flows inside the tooling.

Best for

Tubing, enclosures, window frames, and fluid manifolds.

Value-Added Secondary Ops

Most extrusions require finishing. MES manages precision cutting, CNC machining (drilling, tapping, milling), and surface finishing (anodizing, powder coating, chromating) to deliver a completed, ready-to-assemble part.

Materials

Extrusion Alloys

The 6000-series aluminum alloys are the workhorse of the extrusion industry. They offer excellent extrudability, high structural strength, corrosion resistance, and are readily anodized or welded.

Alloy class

AL 6063
AL 6005A
Material Group
01
AL 6061
T4T6
The most widely used structural alloy. Offers high strength, good toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance. Ideal for heavy-duty structural components.
02
AL 6063
T5T6
Known as the architectural alloy. Provides an excellent surface finish and is highly suitable for anodizing. Used heavily in enclosures, windows, and trims.
03
AL 6005A
T5T6
A compromise between 6061 and 6063. Offers better extrudability than 6061 and higher strength than 6063. Common in automotive and transport.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Custom extrusion dies typically take 2-4 weeks to manufacture, depending on the complexity of the profile (solid vs. hollow) and the number of cavities. Sample profiles are provided for approval shortly after tooling completion.

Yes. We provide comprehensive secondary operations including precision cutting, CNC drilling and tapping, bending, welding, and surface finishing (anodizing, powder coating, and brushing).

6061 is preferred for high-strength structural applications, while 6063 offers a better surface finish and superior anodizing response, making it ideal for visible architectural or consumer product components.

Absolutely. We match your extrusion requirements with our vetted network of extrusion partners across Mexico, India, Vietnam, and other regions to optimize cost, tooling, and lead time.
